The motor industry is one of the traditional pillars of industry, but as we have seen here in Calvados, it has also proved to be one of the most innovative ones in recent years. Motor companies have gradually been stepping up the proportion of manufacturing carried out by parts suppliers, with an attendant rise in the number of subcontractors.
This diversity of companies means that our county is now a key player in Normandy’s motor industry.

90 companies (including upstream services) 12,500 employees , i.e. 65% of the industry’s total workforce in Lower Normandy. The dense network of small and medium-sized subcontractors combines a wide range of skills (mechanical engineering, surface treatment, plastics technology, electronics, etc.) with a highly-qualified workforce.

Training for jobs in the motor industry

Companies based in Calvados regularly invest in order to retool for new processes. They also spend money on initial training and in-house training.

Furthermore, these companies have entered into partnerships with secondary schools, engineering colleges, research laboratories and Caen-Lower Normandy University.
