Calvados has chosen culture as one of the prime vehicles for its image of dynamism, originality and modernity.
It is already a benchmark for the provision of cultural activities at county level, in rural and urban areas alike. |
 |
First-class cultural infrastructures |
Calvados has a wealth of places where people can express their talents in the areas of live entertainment, dance, drama, music, film and literature:
Zénith concert venue in Caen (6,900 seating capacity), 70 cinemas, National Regional Conservatoire, National Centre for Dramatic Art, Le Préau national theatre in Vire, National Choreography Centre, art lending library, 2 theatres in Caen – Théâtre des Cordes and Théâtre de Caen (1,060 seating capacity, 70 performances per year).

A richly diverse heritage |
Calvados is the county with the second highest number of ancient monuments in France. Its architectural, artistic and religious riches include the basilica in Lisieux, the Bayeux Tapestry and castles and abbeys dating from the reign of William the Conqueror. Both Caen and Honfleur have earned the status of “towns of artistic and historical interest”.

As it was the theatre of prolonged conflict during World War II, Calvados remains a place of remembrance. Millions of people travel here each year to visit the places and museums associated with the Allied Landings in 1944, not least the beaches themselves, the American Cemetery in Colleville, Arromanches (remains of the Mulberry Harbour) and the Caen Peace Memorial.
